We had a surprise this weekend when we arrived at the cottage!
The birch tree, that has always leaned gracefully over the water along the shore from the dock, had been chewed down by a beaver some time during the previous night. When we went down to the dock on Saturday we saw the tree lying in the water with all its branches still on it. Then when we went back down to the shore the next morning, every last branch had been stripped from the tree and carted away during the night. All that was left were some woodchips in the water under the now naked birch trunk.
I'd have to say we all were all sad the tree has gone, but a little impressed with the beaver's chewing skills.

I would be sad too to lose a treasured tree but it is so amazing what beavers can do with their teeth that we would work at with a sharp tool.

ReplyDeleteWow, I've never seen a beaver's work up close like that. That's amazing. So, did you bring home what was left of the birch tree? I've seen a lot of decorating ideas with birch branches.

ReplyDeleteThey are amazing, aren't they? Around here they sometimes become a problem, flooding yards, etc., but I have enormous respect for their handywork.

ReplyDeleteI have a friend who lives on the river. You aren't supposed to shoot them, but after destroying EVERY SINGLE TREE on their property, they did shoot it. It weighed 80 pounds!

Aren't they incredible animals? I just love beavers. They don't have them here on the island.
