I believe it is a glacial pothole-studied them in college. Sometimes you can find the round, worn rock at the bottom that carved it out in a water eddy.
My son would say it looks like a giant guitar pick. Beautiful beautiful picture. Surely you have that framed somewhere in your house since the water is a perfect shade of blue and the hole makes it so interesting. It would be a great poster/art print.
